Customer service is an overlooked part of the auto insurance purchasing process. A company is only as good as its service, regardless of its price. When you have a claim, you want your company to be professional, responsive, and make payments promptly with minimum hassle. These qualities go a long way towards customer satisfaction and retaining policyholders, which is key in the insurance industry.
How Companies Were Evaluated
A new insurance company customer satisfaction ratings study published by insure.com shows how auto insurance companies fared in five different satisfaction measurements, which were:
- Customer service
- Claims experience
- Value for the price paid
- Percent who plan to renew their policies
- Percent who would recommend their insurers
The survey was of more than 4,500 insurance customers between February and August 2011. The top thee companies in the auto, home, and life categories earned Insure.com’s “People’s Choice Award”.
The Winners
According to the study, the top 10 auto insurance company customer satisfaction ratings were:
1. USAA
2. Auto-Owners Insurance
3. The Hartford
4. State Farm
5. 21st Century
6. Farmers
7. AAA
8. GMAC Insurance
9. Allstate
10. Travelers
Geico finished in 11th place in the study. USAA was a clear standout as they were #1 in insurance company customer satisfaction ratings for both auto and home insurance. A whopping 98% of USAA members plan to renew their policies. However, USAA is only available to those that are serving or have served in the U.S. military and their families.
Customer Satisfaction Levels
The study reported that the majority of auto insurance policyholders were “completely” or “somewhat” satisfied with the insurer. One surprising finding in the study were that among customers who were “very unsatisfied” with the price of their insurance, 65% planned to renew their policies. These customers need to take the time to shop around, compare rates, and evaluate companies.
