Hartford TrueLane Program

With its millions of customers, The Hartford is one of the largest investment and insurance companies in America. In early 2012, the company will add the Hartford TrueLane program. In doing so, the Hartford joins a growing number of insurers who offer a usage-based insurance for customers.

What Does it Record?

TrueLane is a device that collects driving behavior data from the insured’s car and sends it to The Hartford. The data gathered includes number of miles driven, how fast the car is driven, the rate of acceleration, braking, and other information.

The Hartford can then use the data to evaluate a driver’s driving habits, amount driven, and the driver’s insurance risk. Hartford has not said what type of discounts or incentives they will offer drivers for enrolling in the TrueLane program. However, low mileage and safe drivers can demonstrate they deserve a discount. The program is similar to Progressive’s Snapshot program.

Using Technology to Assess Risk

Historically, insurance companies have used factors such as their age, number of annual miles driven, and driving record to estimate a driver’s risk. It is an inexact science as each driver is different many drivers may underestimate how much they actually drive each year.

However, with today’s available technology, insurance companies can get a much more complete and accurate picture of the driver’s risk. Insurance companies can then reward safe drivers providing the precise data of their driving habits by offering them lower rates. This is good news for safe drivers and behooves drivers with more risk to drive more safely to lower their insurance rates.

We received the Truelane devices for our vehicles covered by The Hartford policy #55PHT 362124 the first part of March and installed same. The vehicles were monitored for approximately 4-5 weeks and are no longer being monitored.

My understanding was we would be notified with instructions and address labels to return the devices, but to date have not received anything. Please let us know what we should do now. Thank you.
