Gays and Lesbians and Car Insurance
Everyone is looking to save money on car insurance. The gay and lesbian community is no different. According to a survey conducted by Harris Interactive® and Witeck–Combs Communications, Inc., the top reason given by gays and lesbians to change auto insurers is that their new company offered lower prices.
The survey also showed that the gay and lesbian community is more Web savvy than the heterosexual community. 17% of gays and lesbians said they had purchased their auto insurance online, compared to just 8% of the heterosexual population. The gay and lesbian community, which numbers in the millions in the U.S., is an important demographic for auto insurers as they push customers to buy online and keep costs lower.
One question that stood out in the survey was that 33 percent of self–identified gay and lesbian respondents in the survey chose a company offering domestic partner benefits to its employees as one of their top three reasons they would change auto insurance carriers. This was at significant variance from the heterosexual respondents, of which only three percent chose this as one of their top three reasons to change auto insurers. Most major auto insurance carriers offer domestic partner benefits to their employees. However, one exception is Geico, which is owned by Berkshire Hathaway, Inc.
Gays and lesbians in cohabiting relationships are usually able to enjoy many of the same insurance discounts offered to married couples. Most car insurance companies treat them the same way as married customers when offering discounts and evaluating risks. Many companies will write policies for couples that reside at the same address regardless of the legal status of their relationship. Leading companies such as Allstate, Geico, Farmers, State Farm, and the Hartford can tailor policies to fit domestic partners.
