PEMCO Insurance Now Sold in Oregon

PEMCO Mutual Insurance Company, which is based in Seattle, Washington, is now selling auto and home insurance in the state of Oregon. PEMCO previously sold insurance only in Washington State. PEMCO officially started insuring Oregon residents on July 1, 2011.

Established in 1949, PEMCO is the largest locally owned insurance company in the Pacific Northwest. It sells auto, home, renters, life, boat, and umbrella policies. PEMCO offers insurance through their offices, agents, direct by phone, and through their website PEMCO.com.

PEMCO Is Focusing on the Portland Market to Start

PEMCO is starting their Oregon business by focusing on the Portland four–county area. The Portland metropolitan area has more than two million residents. The company announced they sold their first policy, a home insurance policy, out of a Beaverton office on June 9, 2011.

With the addition of the Oregon market and its more than 3.8 million residents, PEMCO has the ability to market their products to more than 10.5 million Washington and Oregon residents.

PEMCO's History

When the company began in 1949, PEMCO's original purpose was to sell insurance to public school teachers who were members of the School Employees Credit Union of Washington. Robert J. Handy, a journalism and math teacher, founded both companies and served as CEO from 1936–1984. The companies remain affiliated today.

PEMCO Insurance is now available to Washington and Oregon residents. The company is known for its excellent claims service and low policy rates. However, the company is also known for its strict standards.

Some PEMCO insureds have reported having their PEMCO policy prices increase dramatically after a single accident or have their coverage dropped entirely. By only insuring safe drivers, this allows the company to offer generally low rates.

How Low Are PEMCO's Rates?

PEMCO raised their auto insurance rates for members across the board by about 10% in early 2011, which caused some members to be quite upset. So how low are their rates? PEMCO offers free quotes directly and through their agents. However, some potential customers may not qualify for insurance with PEMCO or may be able to get lower rates with other companies. And again PEMCO is only available to Oregon and Washington residents.
